ABB expands vertical hollow shaft motor range for fire pump applications

ABB has expanded its vertical hollow shaft (VHS) motor range with two new variants designed for fire pump applications, including sprinkler systems, standpipes, hydrants and chemical suppression systems.

The new Weather Protected Type 1 (WP1) and Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) motors are designed for fire protection applications requiring high thrust capacity and reliable operation in demanding environments.

The WP1 range covers power ratings from 15 to 500hp and features weather-protected enclosures, inverter-duty construction and a non-reverse ratchet to prevent backspinning. The motors are UL listed for fire pump installations in accordance with NFPA 20.

The TEFC range, available from 7.5 to 500hp, features a fully enclosed, fan-cooled design and cast-iron construction for indoor and outdoor applications. These motors are also UL listed for fire pump installations.

Both variants feature Class F insulation with Class B temperature rise, extra high-thrust bearings and compatibility with standard NEMA P-base flanges. Their hollow shaft design incorporates a top-mounted coupling to simplify maintenance and provide access to the pump without disturbing the pump shaft.

Additional features include inverter-duty ratings for variable speed drive compatibility, an oil inspection sight glass and provisions for vertical lifting.

Both motor ranges are available immediately through ABB’s global distribution and service network, with multiple voltage configurations and a choice of 60Hz or 50Hz operation.
