Solution for complex LPG transfer application

One of the world’s leading bulk liquid logistics companies has recently taken delivery of the first in a batch of multistage mag-drive self-priming centrifugal pumps from specialist pump distributor Michael Smith Engineers.

The pumping parameters of a high-pressure liquid at 80m3/hr vs 120m differential head are challenging in themselves, but the addition of an ATEX zone 1 requirement, a 40 bar system pressure, and an operating range of -40 to +50°C meant that only the highest quality pump would suffice.

Michael Smith Engineers’ solution was the Dickow HZSMA hx 1026 multistage centrifugal pump with magnetic coupling and side channel priming impeller. The addition of the side channel impeller provides excellent self-priming capability, an essential requirement for this installation. The HZSMA also offers several design features that make it well-suited for this application. These include a unique heat dissipation design, axial thrust compensation through pressure balancing, and high-performance shaft bearings. The pump is also fitted with containment shell temperature monitoring for protection from dry running and loss of containment.

As befits such a demanding application, a wide range of witnessed performance tests were also provided, including hydrostatic, vibration, impeller balance, noise, and even an impact test at -40°C.
